We see plenty of high octane fighting, as well as quick-witted banter- all presented in an art style I have never seen used in the comic book medium. Peppered with music and humor, the story takes the two into dangerous situations with monstrous results. It’s about becoming who you are meant to be, overcoming tragedy, healing, and learning from it. The story is very much a coming-of-age tale for both Mansour and Awa- both were their preset destinies in their minds. Mansour hopes to reclaim the land, and Awa will do anything it takes to help. We follow the duo of the misguided Prince Mansour and his royal storyteller, or Dejeli, Awa, as they make their to the tower of the Wizard Sourmaoro, who thrusted the kingdom into pain and suffering. The vibrant artwork, the character designs- has a very animated and yet old-world feel to it. All around the waterfront, birds made use of every visible perch. The captain handed the prince his spyglass. He could speak to Kaddar with less formality than most, since he had taught the prince all that young man knew of boats and sailing. “Tired of broiling, Your Highness?” The man spoke without looking away from the commercial harbor outside the breakwater enclosing the imperial docks. He went to the captain, trying not to wince as too-long-inactive legs tingled. Bring me something to drink,” he ordered the slaves. He yelped, swatted the fly, got to his feet, and removed the crown. A stinging fly chose that moment to land on Kaddar’s arm. Looking about, the prince saw the captain, leaning on the rail, scowl and make the Sign against evil on his chest. Imperial dignity kept him in this unshaded chair, where a gold surface collected the sun to throw it back into his eyes. He shot a glare at the nobles and academics on hand to welcome the visitors: they could relax under the awnings. He had been waiting aboard the imperial galley since noon, wearing the panoply of his office as the day, hot for autumn, grew hotter. His Royal Highness Kaddar, prince of Siraj, duke of Yamut, count of Amar, first lord of the Imperium, heir apparent to His Most Serene Majesty Emperor Ozorne of Carthak, fanned himself and wished the Tortallans would dock. Side note ~ "The one time we had sex was honestly the best sex I've ever had" ~ umm, seriously? you're like 17 and I can't recall, but perhaps this was your first time, so sure it's prob the best you've had if it's the only you've had. Overall, a quick read that wrapped the series up perfectly. For most of the book he's really immature and makes multiple derogatory comments though, so that really turned me off. He sees that Six is unhappy and really wants to rectify this and I love how he did so. Told solely in Daniel's POV regarding how Six gave their baby up for adoption without him knowing. There's a widespread misconception that New Adult is just Young Adult with some Romance-quality smut or even straight-up erotica thrown in. So far no one can provide a definitive definition of the genre. This is a question that writers, agents, and publishers alike are struggling to answer right now, being that the genre is so new (I'm talking like newborn baby new, as in almost no one had heard of it just a few months back). Read and reward yourself-there's a giveaway at the end! But first, a little primer. I'm so excited to introduce a new feature on Fictiffous! Please welcome my first guest blogger, author ST Bende, who's here as part of a blog tour for her upcoming release, ELSKER (book one of the New Adult paranormal romance series, THE ELSKER SAGA, releasing this May from Entranced Publishing). I just wanted to rant about how terrible I found the 2020 live action Mulan movie, and Twitter wasn’t enough to express all my feelings, so I recorded a 35 minute video on a shoddy camera and made a YouTube account to throw it up there. I didn’t have serious thoughts about becoming a YouTuber until I accidentally blew up with my first video though. I think there’s much misunderstanding about Chinese culture from Western points of view, so I’ve made it my life’s mission to demystify it by spreading the stories I love. While there’s “typical Chinese culture” that seems to make everything about Confucianism and obedience and sticking within your designated social roles, there has also always been a counterculture that rebelled against that, and that spirit is just as Chinese. Finding the stories of defiance and resilience in the historical records inspired me like nothing else. I got really into Chinese history a few years ago when I was in a pretty dark place in my life. |
