![]() In this sparkling debut novel, Jessica Brockmole explores the many layers of connection that bind lovers and family members across the years and through adversity. ![]() ![]() But it takes the determination of a second generation at war to bring Elspeth and David's story to its natural conclusion. Here David and Elspeth emerge as two distinct personalities, drawn to each other across the cultural divide symbolized by the Atlantic Ocean and the greater divide that propels David to war in France even as Elspeth clings to her island. To sustain a novel entirely through the exchange of letters poses a challenge to any writer, although the epistolary novel itself has a long tradition: the earliest novels adopted this form. A few weeks later, his poet, Elspeth Dunn, responds, initiating a conversation that will flourish as friendship and eventually as romance, with consequences that reach across the first world war and into the next. As the young man, David Graham, notes in his first paragraph, poetry is not his usual literary fare, but something in this book has touched his soul. In March 1912, a college student at the University of Illinois takes time away from his usual pursuits-painting the dean's horse blue, climbing dorm walls with a sack of squirrels, reading Huckleberry Finn-to write a letter to a Scottish poet living on the remote Isle of Skye. ![]() ![]() Which, thank God, because I don’t have health insurance. I do this because it’s the one profession, in my case, that doubles as an antidepressant. Why else would I choose writing as a job? Not for the money or the imminent danger of offending someone on Twitter and immolating my whole career in ten seconds. I wasn’t articulating these thoughts at age eight or whatever, but they penetrated. They turned an ugly condition into art-and wit! And beauty! The moment you discover that a bad thing can be redeemed by creative human intervention is the day you unlock the reason, or a reason, to keep existing. That must be why I remember the Steig books that rhymed with my tantrums. Steig had a Dickens-level command of childhood misery, depicting it as an endless tunnel of denials and supervision. If you were a fan of the man’s work as a child, you may have been attracted by the verbal shenanigans, the breadth of subject matter (he wrote about dentists and talking bones), the mammalian heroes, or, perhaps, the streak of subtextual misery. That’s the man in a nutshell: hellfire fury and imaginative splendor. ![]() When he had trouble sleeping, he envisioned himself the owner of a magic long-range dart that he could use to destroy enemies. ![]() ![]() He regarded his education as “defective.” And his book titles, sheesh: The Lonely Ones, All Embarrassed, The Agony in the Kindergarten, Rotten Island, Our Miserable Life, and The Rejected Lovers, to name a few. He considered despair the human condition. For someone who wrote children’s books, William Steig was as adult as they come. ![]() ![]() ![]() Fortunately, the left-behind astronaut is the mission botanist and he engineers a way to make food for himself and contact Earth to orchestrate a retrieval. What they don’t know is that he’s still alive, it will be four years before anyone can return for him, and he only has thirty days of food. During their evacuation, one of their crew is killed and they are forced to leave his body behind as they blast off for Earth. It’s hard not to know the setup of The Martian by now, but if you haven’t read it, it’s set in a near-future Mars mission where the crew abandons their Mars habitat during a severe storm. I’ve gotten my share of one-star reviews from readers expecting lightsabers and dogfights who were unhappy with chapters on planetary science and alien biology. ![]() ![]() As a hard science fiction writer myself, I can sympathize with this problem. Either people enjoyed the MacGyver-like survival science or they disliked a science lesson wrapped in a story. Based upon the reviews, it was a very polarizing story. I stumbled upon The Martian on Goodreads. As it turns out, many people really enjoyed The Martian, and, next thing you know, Matt Damon is playing his main character in a blockbuster. He originally planned to give it away, but Amazon requires you to sell ebooks for a minimum of 99 cents, so that’s what he did. His friends really enjoyed it, but some found it hard to read on their computer screens and asked that he publish it on Kindle. When he originally wrote The Martian, he published it one chapter at a time on his blog for his friends to read. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pockets?
